Casey Turton - Mites & PeeWee Head Coach

Coach Turton will return once again to the Jr. Pirates in 2010-2011 after leading the Squirt team to the most successful season in the Association’s young existence. In 2009-2010, Coach Turton led the Squirt Jr. Pirates to an overall record of 23-5 and 16-1 CHL Conference record on their way to a 2009-2010 CHL Championship, the first in the history of the ECHA. The Squirt Jr. Pirates outscored their opponents 236 to 80 during the 2009-10 campaign.

A native of Lorain, Ohio, Casey brings over 15 years of coaching experience at levels including Squirt, Pee Wee, Bantam, Midget, and Junior C level teams. A level IV USA Hockey Certified coach, he has coached successful teams from House Select to AA level youth hockey programs. He was instrumental in developing and leading the Lorain County Hockey Association for over 10 years. Coach Turton was also an Executive Board Member of the Cleveland Suburban Hockey League, which spans 35 member organizations throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania. He was instrumental in implementing the mandatory neck guard rule in the USA Hockey MidAm District as a player safety rule. He coached his sons, Jay (defense) and Patrick (goaltender) in the Cleveland, Ohio area. His sons now live in New York and Ohio.

When not on the ice, Casey is the Managing Editor of Pitt County Women’s Journal and Carolina Men magazines. He also provides website and computer programming services. He is married to the lovely Anna who shares and sometimes tolerates Casey’s passion for hockey. When not on the ice, Coach Turton enjoys cooking, fishing, traveling, politics, music, and reading.

Casey’s philosophy of coaching young men and women in hockey revolves around integrating the skills of skating, shooting and passing (or goaltending) with the ability to assess (read) a game situation and act (react) in a creative and high-energy way. He believes this game-level strategy that works leads to a passion for the sport that will carry with the youngsters into adulthood.

When asked about the challenges that face the ECHA and the upcoming PeeWee season, Casey remarks: “I would like to see the players and coaches move to the next level in our skills and competitiveness by committing to the sport and playing higher level opponents.” Coach Casey brings a unique sense of humor, an endless passion for hockey, and an unending commitment to help build successful hockey players on and off the ice. The ECHA congratulates Coach Casey on the 2009-10 Championship season and we look forward to attaining a new set of goals in 2010-11.

Chet Ulrich - Squirt Head Coach

As an Assistant Coach, Chet helped lead the Squirt Jr. Pirates to a CHL Championship and 23-5 record in 2009-10. Coach Ullrich was in charge of the forwards and team skill development en route to their remarkable year. The team’s skill progression was demonstrated during the CHL Tournament as the Squirt Jr. Pirates won Gold medal comfortably in the CHL Team Skills competition. A USA Hockey Level III certified coach, Coach Ullrich was also the Head Coach of the ECHA Squirt Buccaneers at the 2009 North Carolina State Games in Charlotte, NC. He has worked in the past as an assistant coach with the Carolina Hurricanes Youth Hockey Camps.

Coach Ullrich has an extensive career playing the game of hockey. Chet's hockey career started in North Carolina after moving from New York at the age of 12. Chet began his youth hockey career in Raleigh with the Raleigh Storm (AA), the East Coast Eagles (AA), and Team Carolina (AAA). He was also given the opportunity to represent Team South at the Chicago Showcase and Team Southeast at regional camps. He played college hockey at North County Community College in Saranac Lake, NY. He also played Jr “A” hockey in Troy, NY for the Hudson Valley Eagles and Jr “B” hockey in Norwich, CT.

Chet pursued a professional career in hockey as he played in Varkaus, Finland in 2007-08 until a hip injury ended his season. After the 2007-08 season, Chet participated in tryouts with the Richmond Renegades of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). Unsuccessful in making the Renegades team in tryouts due to the hip injury, his rights were dealt to the Twin City Cyclones in Winston-Salem, NC. When the SPHL team folded in March of 2009, Chet turned his efforts to making an impact in youth hockey as a coach. Coach Ullrich relates well to the kids and is able to get the most out of their abilities. He has a passion for passing on hockey skills to youth as they progress.

When not on the ice, Chet is a student at Pitt Community College and works full-time at Round Table Toys in Winterville, NC. We are very excited for Coach Ullrich to be at the helm of the Squirt Jr. Pirates in 2010-11.

Mike Markham - Midget Head Coach

The newest member of the ECHA Jr. Pirates coaching staff is not new to hockey in Greenville, North Carolina. Mike Markham coached the East Carolina University Hockey Club the past two seasons and led them to consecutive appearances in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Southern Regionals. Taking a different role with the ECU Pirate Program in 2010-2011, he joins the Jr. Pirates coaching staff with over 40 years of coaching experience having been behind the bench at various levels since 1968. With a Level IV USA Hockey certification as well as an Ontario Hockey Association National Coaches Certification, Mike has coached many different youth teams with the most recent being the Syracuse Jr. Crunch and Jr. Stars. Both competed at the Tier II Junior A level in the OPJHL (Ontario Provincial Jr. Hockey League). The team has also placed at least one player on the National Development Team each of the 8 years of its existence.
Mike has also been involved in the NIHOA (National Ice Hockey Officials Association) for over 30 years and has served as the Chief Referee for the New York Central Area AHAUS (Amateur Hockey Association of United States). He has been both a linesman and a referee in the NAHL, ECHL, AHL, and the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference at all levels (DI, II, III).

Upon retiring from the telephone company in Upstate New York, Coach Markham moved to New Bern, NC approximately five years ago to enjoy golf, racquetball, fishing, and hunting.  He likes all water activities and is very active in the New Bern Elks Lodge #764. Coach Markham has a son who lives in Greensboro, NC .

A New York Rangers fan, Coach Markham brings a unique perspective to coaching. As the former Chief Referee for the New York Central Area AHAUS and as a former Junior A coach, he understands better than most the need for wide open, aggressive, and often physical hockey, delivered with discipline, to be successful. While no stranger to winning, Coach Markham has indicated that his most important job is “to mold, teach, and develop every player, to help them be a better athlete on the ice, and a better person off the ice.”

We are very excited that Coach Markham has chosen to become part of the Jr. Pirate family and lead our Bantam Jr. Pirates in 2010-2011.
